What is an e-Portfolio?

A student portfolio is samplings of a student’s work designed to highlight the student’s best work, demonstrate the student’s progress over time, make the work available for evaluation, showcase achievements, and/or provide opportunities for the student to reflect on his or her work.

The Electronic Portfolio is very much the same as a traditional paper portfolio, but it is created electronically (on the computer). As much of the work you do for your classes is already in electronic format, creating the e-Portfolio is relatively simple. Creating an e-Portfolio vs. a traditional portfolio, makes the portfolio neater, easier to find materials included, it can be shared with family and friends that are not geographically nearby, and is more fun to build. It's easier too, to add your own personal style.

Why Create an e-Portfolio?

e-Portfolios (or electronic portfolios)are becoming increasingly popular in education (and for good reason). When students create portfolios that highlight various work samples and other learning artifacts, students think more reflectively about their own growth as learners and represent that growth through a variety of media(text, graphics, sounds, and even video). Additionally, students' motivation to produce their best work increases as they compose for a "world wide" audience.

The Electronic Portfolio is used by educational institutions and organizations interested in providing students with a means on which to reflect on past learning, set and assess goals, highlighting their progress towards those goals.

What are the Benefits?

Ultimately, the most important benefit of working with an Electronic Portfolio may be the sense of accomplishment derived from collecting, and reflecting on achievements and successes throughout your years in high school. Creating e-Portfolios also gives students an ability to view their own personal and academic growth. and engages them in active learning.

Additionally, individual learning shifts to collaborative learning. The growth of blogs, wiki's and social networking sites are evidence of this major shift.

Another, often overlooked but very important benefit derived from students creating e-Portfolios, is that parents are able to become more involved in student learning, growth and accomplishments. EP's make it easy for parents to stay abreast of actual content of students work, if EP's are posted regularly online.
