The Okemo Community Challenge Grants are wonderful Christmas presents and English teachers at Black River High School are grinning along with their students because of this. The books had been waiting, and then the carts arrived—beautiful hard maple carts with solid walnut handles made by Brent Karner, owner of Clear Lake Furniture. The carts, and the materials they are made to hold, are all a part of the Writing the Rules grant written by teachers at BRHS and received from the Okemo Community Challenge. The grant creates three mobile class sets of up-to-date reference materials to assist in the integration of writing across the curriculum, one set for each floor of the school to make the material easily accessible. The Writers INC handbooks will empower students by giving them an extensive writing resource that they can use in all of their classes. Writing is thinking because it involves reflecting and analyzing. Students are also working on creating their own handbook that will include samples of their own work. When students develop their writing skills they are also developing their thinking skills which will help them grow into thoughtful, reasoning adults. That is truly a gift for the community.
